10000 30:38.31 19 Birmingham Aviva Olympic Trials & UK Championships (22 Jun 12)

2012 Olympic 10,000m trials report-

Quality field!

After looking at the start list I knew I would be in some good company when the field included the likes of Kenenisa Bekele and Gebre Gebremariam +  other great Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes (Bekele is the world record holder for 5 & 10,000m)

I travelled up the morning of the race and tried to relax my legs as much as possible when I got there. The 10,000m was in the evening so I got the athlete coach from the hotel to the stadium to get myself ready for the race.

25 laps of the track is a long way! After going out hard through the first half of the race I was hanging on the last 5km and came home in a finishing time of 30.38 for my debut 10,000m.

After looking back on how I ran while sitting in the hotel after the race there were some keys points that I need to include in my training when it comes to next year’s track season, they are:

1-      Don’t drop the mileage down too low during the track season (keep it around 85-90 per week) otherwise I will lose strength for 10ks

2-      Keep a long run each week in the training plan

3-      Remember that it’s not all about speed and its more about strength
